VISITING BATU CAVES

WHAT: 
A temple, inside a cave, inside a mountain, 272 steps up.

 

WHERE: 
Outrims of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia


TIME NEEDED: 
About 1 hour when you have gotten to it. The time to get there depends on whether you take public transport (1 hour or more) or taxi (30 minutes from Bukit Bintang area).

MONEY NEEDED: 
Because we ha more money than time, we choose to take a taxi which landed on RM 45 there and RM 50 back. There is a possibility to get it cheaper by taking MRT (KMUTER goes all the way in 30 minutes - but then you have to get to KL Sentral first.) although we are no sure about the exact prices (Tripadisor might have said under RM 30 per way, but we have no reliable source that that is correct...)

The cave in itself is free, however, there is a possiblity go on a guided tour in the Dark Cave for RM 35.

But, we saw this sign

and since Jonathan is severly arachnophobic, we choose not to go in to a dark place with possibly giant spiders.



WATCH OUT FOR!:
  The monkeys are NOT shy, and this little motherlover took my waterbottle that small second I wasn't paying attention.

Could have been the camera I held in the other hand, so I was lucky considering..

People keep feeding them even though signs everywhere strictly prohibit it. The animals are therefor not afraid of humans, leading them to steal stuff, crash phones and even behave agressivly towards visitors. Be attentive! 

DON'T MISS: 
The beautiful artwork on the roofs on the buildings and on the top of the entrence.

OUR VISIT: 
We got there by 11.30 am. Malaysia is nowhere near as hot as Thailand so the temperature was fine, a bit cloudy which made the climb so much more pleasant.

The climb was, although a bit grueling, not that hard and took only about 5 minutes.

While inside the caves, there was actually not a lot to see.

The "main" attracton in there was the temple in the very end, and although beautiful, really not that special (have you been to The King and Queen Pagoda at Doi Inthanon I guess you're doomed for temples any less than spectacular for the rest of your life).

The cave was cool and the music by the temple was soothing in a mindfilling, almost zen-ical way and for a moment we just stood there, listening. 

Then that moment was over and we started the climb down again. 

WORTH IT?: 

Well. 

Not for a second visit. We were happy we did it - the golden statue in front was kind of breathtaking and, for a moment by the temple we felt a bit... spiritually enlightened. Then came the taxis and the agressive monkeys and the fact that it wasn't really much to see. 

Yes, go there. But don't make it the first priority, maybe not even the second. If you have a free afternoon, sure. But don't make any detours because of it.
